Dysfunctional Fitness Vs Improved Health

Rev. Paul is a Kettlebell client of mine with a passion for athletics and hard work. Unfortunately he has had several knee injuries. In all likelihood, with a movement coach and the concepts I have been able to pass on to him from the RKC and CK-FMS many of these may have been avoided. As a student of human movement, a martial arts instructor, a certified RKC Kettlebell Instructor and someone soon to be a CK-FMS specialist I can't help wincing when I see a person at the gym perform high reps with dangerous technique. Daily I see knees collapsing inward, lower backs swaying unnaturally, wrists held at unnatural angles, shoulders floating out of their sockets and necks being cranked.

Your average exerciser latches onto the latest exercise program, video or article that treats fitness like a one-size fits all solution nd attacks it with gusto. All of sudden the routine calls for an exercise like jumping onto a box. The exerciser incurs an injury they attribute to the box jump. You'll hear something like "box jumps are bad for your knees" and many sheople (sheep+people) will nod in agreement. However, the ugly truth is a box jump doesn't hurt knees by default, the way YOU perform that particular movement hurts YOUR knees. In other words, your movement pattern sucks and you had no business performing that movement. You may have lacked the mobility, stability or simply good technique. With each rep you performed of the box squat you were causing repetitive micro trauma.  The Book, Video or Youtube clip in question couldn't coach you or correct your mistakes and you lacked the judgement or experience to make a sound decision. 
Daily I hear people telling "war stories" about their own exercise induced injuries that occurred during running, bench pressing, squatting, step aerobics etc...  As the injuries compound over the years these individuals develop movement compensations such as limping, reduced mobility (I can't press overhead with my right arm) and essentially become a pile of injuries and poor movement under fit and tone muscle.  Sadly this sort of dysfunctional fitness is becoming more and more the standard as exercisers are continuing their routines without correcting their movement and relying on machine based routines which appear safe but can actually place unnatural sheering forces against the joints, tendons and ligaments.

Little do they know that there does exist a proven system for identifying poor, dangerous movement patterns and prescribing corrective exercise guaranteed to improvement the quality of their movement.
NFL players are being taught to roll like an infant again. NBA basketball stars are being taught how to balance on one knee, PGA golf stars are deadlifting, runners are throwing medicine balls and Martial Artists are being taught how to improve their kicking by working on shoulder mobility. This may sound like a bunch of voodoo or random exercise but it's a scientific system, peer-reviewed and proven effective for thirteen years. The system is call the Functional Movement Screen or FMS for short.
